Introduction

Plastic Free Warrington is a community-owned campaign that forms our town’s contribution to the Plastic Free Communities initiative led by well-known environmental charity Surfers Against Sewage. Through this we are part of a network of well over 640 communities across the UK that are tackling single-use plastic from our beaches, rivers and green spaces, all the way back to the brands and businesses who create it. We are also a flagship project for local community group Warrington Outdoors.

We are led by a small and inclusive steering group who are passionate about restoring the health of the environment. Reducing pollution by single-use plastic is therefore for us a key part of that and something we can all help start to tackle by making just a few key changes. Let us know if you’d like to help us!

Key Objectives

We are working with local governance, businesses, organisations and communities to achieve the Surfers Against Sewage “Plastic Free Community” status for our town. To do this we must work together achieve the 5 key objectives listed below.

Our success depends completely on the generosity and community spirit of normal people like you and me. If you would like to help in any capacity then please don’t hesitate to contact us!

1.Local Council – we need them to pass a resolution supporting the town’s journey to Plastic Free Community status, committing to plastic-free alternatives and plastic-free initiatives within the constituency.

IN PROGRESS  | We are making initial preparations.
2.Local Businesses – at least 46 local businesses (2-3 per borough ward) must each eliminate at least 3 different items of single-use plastic from their operations, or replace with sustainable alternatives – obtaining Plastic Free Champion status.  This must include at least 1 flagship business of over 100 employees.

IN PROGRESS – 8/46  | If your business would like to find out more about gaining Plastic Free Champion status please don’t hesitate to contact us to find out more!  We will help you formulate a viable plan which might even save you money, and earn you the right to proudly show off your Plastic Free plaque, certificate and digital logo!
3.Local Communities – at least 5 organisations from each of the town’s 22 borough wards (111 in total) to sign our Plastic Free Communities Pledge, and support our initiative in their community.  Those 5 organisations must cover the 5 categories: (1) Schools & Colleges (2) Community Spaces (3) Community Organisations (4) Community Events (5) Community Communications.

IN PROGRESS  | We are working with an increasing number of community allies – please contact us if you would like us to speak to you too!
4.Local Events – we need to organise and make open for all to attend at least 2 events in a single calendar-year.  They provide an opportunity to engage a wide local audience in the Plastic Free Community campaign.  Litter picks, fundraisers for SAS, mass-unwraps are potential options.

IN PROGRESS   | We co-host regular litter-picks – see our Facebook Events page, and are planning a Mass Unwrap to take place in late February.  Please let us know if you would like to help!
5.Local Steering Group – of key stakeholders to meet at least twice a year to discuss progress and plan future work of Plastic Free Warrington.  Must include a council representative and a flagship business employee.

IN PROGRESS | Please contact us if you think you have something to offer whether on the steering group or other key role.  We have a lot to do and delegation and teamwork will be key to our success!
